and I'm back

Well, I never really left... but I'm finally here to post something.

Emotion: Love
Situation: Lost love (long distance relationships)
"Wish you were here"

I actually have two other ones done, but I had to hand it in to my thesis teacher for marking. So I won't be able to get it scanned in until after school starts again.

Sadness from the death of a first pet

is the next theme that I'm doing. There is also another one before this one, but I still have yet to finish/redo some of it. I'm hoping that I'll be done by the end of this weekend.
For some reason I'm a bit excited to do this one, mostly because I plan on sewing a lot in it. I guess I'll see how my finger/hands holds up to this abuse.

More thesis

Emotion: Anticipation
Situation: Waiting during pregnancy
"Wish to see you soon"

Emotion: Awe
Situation: First riding a bike by yourself
"Wish you could see this too"

So I think I'll actually type up my thesis...
It is:
Postcards that depict little life situations that are ruled by emotions, using imagery that is usually found on postcards.

... yup
the next one I'm working on is "Love", with "lost love". Gary Taxali, my thesis prof, took out a part of the illustration that heavily implies a bad breakup, and instead suggested I put in something that is more subtle (which was originally in the rough anyways)... I guess because there will be text near the actual illustration when it's presented, it might compute and make sense being so simple...
Or that's what I'm hoping anyways.

Oh right...
Aside from, I also snatched the domain, so I'll be updating the website soon. There won't be a lot of change, but I'll also be mirroring the two domain names together, so it doesn't matter if someone looks me up using my internet name (nawafiai), or my actual name (miki sato)

"Hoping you are well" - Fear for a loved one

It's my first final illustration piece done for thesis this year. There were some (aka LOTS) of things wrong with the "Anticipation" one I started and showed in the last entry, so I'm going to be redoing it (or cropping it... depending on which looks better).

Maybe I should actually write about what my thesis is about... but I think I'll do that in another post.

so for now, ciaooo

To put it quickly: this is a WIP for the first illustration due on Wednesday for thesissssssss.
The colour of the background took ages for me to become satisfied with. Satisfaction mostly due to the fact that I like how the orange goes with it.

Time to mess it up!

random sketches

For fun sake, I thought I would post two of my roughs that I submitted with my thesis proposal...This one was for my old thesis proposal that got semi-rejected.

aaaand, a sketch that I attached to my approved thesis idea

That is all.

drawing class and thesis

For my first Drawing and Painting class, we were supposed to use black and white to depict a random painting/image... So this is a horribly rendered version of J. Alden Weir's "Face Reflected in a Mirror" in acrylic on random board. The proportions are so very wrong.....
So that's that.

Thesis is a complete stress factor at the moment, mostly because the profs sent us a mass email pretty much saying that our ideas were a big disappointment. I guess it hits closer to home because I know I could have probably done better and utilized the time over the summer more efficiently for it. The one-on-ones are tomorrow (Wednesday), so then I'll be able to hear all the bad things about my ideas. But until then, I've been sort of rethinking my ideas and all the bad points about it and how I can maybe make it better, and also thinking of newer ideas in case all my ideas were all rejected to the core. But I think the initial reaction of "OHGODI'MSCREWED" is gone, but it's still slightly there.

So I guess I'll see tomorrow....

One Week

Long time no write! Mostly due to the fact that I was back home in Ottawa for most of the month.
I thought I'd just post to say that I'm not dead yet

There's only one more week till school starts again, and it's kind of unnerving, seeing it's the last year at OCAD (but I also happen to look forward to going back to school again). I've finally started writing my three thesis proposals, but actually typing up my ideas (as opposed to thinking about it in my head) really make my ideas seem bland and mundane. It also brings up the fact that most of my ideas are still so vague and that I really need to hone in on it a bit more and flesh it out... I don't even have proper examples to give for each of them yet. Time's running out!

So when I was in Ottawa, I went through a lot of my old sketchbooks and drawings I did since childhood all the way to before I came to OCAD... It's really interesting to see what I do and don't do anymore, and it's kind of a shame, because I seemed to have lost a lot of quirky ideas since I started going to art school. The way I draw people changed as well (very expressive body language), so hopefully I'll be able to go back to some of my old methods, because I miss those times. That's what summer should have been for... but now it's too late.

Anyways, it's time to go back to work.

cup communication + thesis

Above is a freshly made piece. I think it took me about 5 hours or so including the sketching out... It's some sort of commentary on communication

But anyways.
It's already July, and August is coming fast. It's weird to think that come September, it'll be my last year at OCAD. I've been (sort of) thinking of Thesis, and I think I have about 2 ideas right now that are a bit more fleshed out than the others, but it's still far from being presentable.
I have a long way to go

Oh yes!! And I'll finally update my website, and knock off some of the older illusts that I don't like anymore

scatter brain

To put it short:I'm thinking that I should draw something I usually don't... like machines and architecture
So hopefully if my motivation's still holding strong, that's what I'll do next

and with that, I should sleep

I realized that there was more that I wanted to put up, so here they are

A few inclass doodles that I did... mostly consisting of the backs of people sitting in chairs during class

Probably will end up experimenting with technique with one of these sketches...

tarsiers and mushrooms

Gasp! A post!
I thought I would post some of the things I've been working on recently.

First up:The colours are still a bit weird, because I adjusted the colours at school where the monitor settings are a lot brighter than the laptop I'm using at home. My scanner's having some issues as well, so I might rescan and readjust later on when I get the chance to.

Also, technically, this was supposed to be for the concept "unnecessary thoughts"that I talked about before, but the end product shows nothing of the concept... ah well

And because it's hard to compare sizes from the computer screen, here's a picture of one of the mushrooms.... and also because I happen to really like how tiny they are

And second up is something I finished making:

It's supposed to be a tarsier (one of the smallest monkeys in the world... Look them up if you want it to look into your soul)
I had a fun time making it, even if it is shoddily made in some parts. I learned a lot from my mistakes on this one...

I plan on updating the website soon, but probably after I'm done another illustration

And that's all for now, folks!
'Till next time

So after hectic things like having my laptop break (it still is, and is now in the shop) and the start of summer school classes (and the horrible lack of a summer job), I thought I should probably start some serious drawing soon...

I have a lot of ideas in my head, but I've put aside most of them because I don't think they're good enough... I'll probably eventually get to them anyways

The two dominant ideas that's on my mind right now go along with the theme of:
"safe secrets" and "unnecessary thoughts"
(I think I'm leaning to more of the latter)

Now let's see if any of them will get done before I think the ideas are horrible and I start thinking of something else.

And to end this, I think I should probably post some sort of drawing, so... ummm... hereTadaaa

So I'm back at home in Ottawa for a few days before I start being bound to Toronto because of summer school... I thought I'd share some photos of my cat... just because

Her name's Chacha, and I remember sleeping with her in my room when she was just a kitten. She's known to be chubby and lazy and a bit weird. Anyways.

I was sorting through my old stuffed animals, which ended up being put on the couch.
Can you spot the cat?

Being a cat is tough

the submerged

I finished the illustration, so I thought I would post it here (seeing, it probably won't be updated to the website until I have one or two more new ones)... I can nitpick a lot of things about it, and there are things that are wrong with it. But there you have it.

submerged wip

So I've been Internetless for a few days now, and it feels pretty cruddy. I need to go to school to use their computers (what I'm doing now), and there's barely anyone here because it's apparently summer already...
Aside from not having the net or another week or so (or maybe more), I've been working on the illustration for the lineart drawing that I posted in the last post (even though I like the lineart the way it is).
I have pictures!

I have this bad tendency to work on my bed, even though I have two tables in my room... but yes. There shall be jellyfish in this illustration.

That is all.

submerged gamer

Something I doodled in my sketchbook while waiting for my turn in class. I plan on making this into a full illustration soon, and have already painted the background for it... I guess I'll just see how it goes.

So I drew these bugs for a school assignment where we had to do a movie poster... I printed these out and transferred them onto painted cardboard etcetc
I thought I would just link them up here. most of them are identical because I copy/pasted them...

Thursday, April 17, 2008

So for my Sequential Narrative 2 class, we were to think of and finish a project that you initiated yourself, and it would then be a semester-long thing that you need to work on. You were pretty open to do whatever you wanted, as long as it was sequential....
I just wish I did something more with this than what I did... but anywho (that's what summer's for)

I did a comic thing that involved random events of four people's lives, which ultimately end up all tying together. Most of the comics involve the characters talking to themselves, which end up being a catalyst to the other events in the other character's lives... weird to explain.
I also did the panels in a way that the "cameras" are stationary, while the characters are the only things in the panels moving. I guess that sounds boring (and lots of copying frames), but drawing the subtle movements in the characters was fun... sort of...

I learned that binding by hand is actually pretty fun. It looks nice, but the story inside is lacking...

slightly more recent

I really liked how this onion turned out with watercolour...

Ink brush stuff

Some birds in ink and marker

old doodles

Some old stuff from my sketchbook/notebook... a few months old

starting this up

So I thought that maybe I should start posting roughs and sketches again in a blog-format.
This way I will be able to document my process and, in a way, organize myself.
